School Governors - more information about the work of the Governing Body
The role of the Governing Body is to:
- Challenge and support school leadership in equal measure
- Understand strengths & weaknesses of the school including quality of teaching
- Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Understand and take sufficient account of pupil data, particularly their understanding and use of school dashboard data.
- Carry out statutory governors' duties.
- Awareness of impact of teaching on learning and progress in different subjects and year groups.
- Provide support for an effective headteacher
- Be transparent & accountable in terms of governance structures, attendance at meetings and contact with parents and carers.
- Understand how the school makes decisions about teacher salary progression.
- Performance manage the headteacher and hold them to account.
Structure and remit
At Edward Feild each governor is elected or appointed for a four year term of office. The governing body has a Chair and Vice-Chair who are elected each year. The full governing body meets six times per year and committees meet once or twice termly. There are currently three committees: Curriculum and Standards, Resources and Pay Committee. Associate Members do not have the right to vote in meetings. The purpose of each committee is as follows:

- holding the leadership to account for the standards achieved by all pupils in the school including: pupil attainment and progress, closing the gap for under-achieving groups and pupil behaviour and safety.
- holding the school leadership to account for improving the quality of teaching as an essential route to improving standards
To ensure the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources. This will include:
- holding the leadership team to account for the efficient use of resources – money, people and premises – to get the best educational
- ensuring that funds allocated to the school for specific purposes (e.g. pupil premium, sports funding) are used effectively and that the
- ensuring that clear procedures are in place for the performance management of all staff and for rewarding consistently good performance and to hold the headteacher to account for the effective implementation of those procedures.
To monitor the annual pattern of pay progression at each level having regard to:
- the correlation between pay, quality of teaching and outcomes for pupils;
- the expectation of differentiated pay;
- the need to reward good performance and also to ensure underperformance is dealt with robustly.
